Custom metal stairs and railings: a complete guide

Published on 17 August 2026 by Metal S.r.l.

Outdoor steel staircase with metal railings

Metal stairs and railings combine safety and design: they are among the most requested custom fabrications in our workshop, for homes and industry alike.

What standards require

  • Minimum railing height: 100 cm (110 cm above certain fall heights and in workplaces)
  • Openings that stop a 10 cm sphere (child safety)
  • Railings must withstand the horizontal loads required by the intended use
  • For structural steel elements: CE marking to EN 1090

How we work

  1. On-site survey
  2. Workshop drawing approved with the customer (also from the architect's DXF/DWG)
  3. CNC plasma cutting of plates, gussets and decorative elements
  4. Bending and welding with pre-assembly in the workshop
  5. Finishing: galvanizing, powder coating or brushing
  6. Installation with chemical anchors or embedded plates

Lead time and cost

A standard railing usually takes 2–4 weeks from survey to installation. Cost depends on length, material, finish and design complexity: plasma cutting also makes custom decorative panels affordable.
