Custom metal stairs and railings: a complete guide
Published on 17 August 2026 by Metal S.r.l.

Metal stairs and railings combine safety and design: they are among the most requested custom fabrications in our workshop, for homes and industry alike.
What standards require
- Minimum railing height: 100 cm (110 cm above certain fall heights and in workplaces)
- Openings that stop a 10 cm sphere (child safety)
- Railings must withstand the horizontal loads required by the intended use
- For structural steel elements: CE marking to EN 1090
Materials and finishes
| Solution | Ideal context | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanized + painted steel | Outdoors, heavy use | Longest life (duplex), any RAL |
| Painted steel | Indoors | Economical, many colours |
| Brushed stainless | Premium outdoors, seaside | AISI 316 near the sea |
| Corten | Architecture, gardens | Rich texture, zero maintenance |
| Glass or cable infill | Contemporary design | Metal posts + light infills |
How we work
- On-site survey
- Workshop drawing approved with the customer (also from the architect's DXF/DWG)
- CNC plasma cutting of plates, gussets and decorative elements
- Bending and welding with pre-assembly in the workshop
- Finishing: galvanizing, powder coating or brushing
- Installation with chemical anchors or embedded plates
Lead time and cost
A standard railing usually takes 2–4 weeks from survey to installation. Cost depends on length, material, finish and design complexity: plasma cutting also makes custom decorative panels affordable.
