How to request a metal fabrication quote

A metal fabrication quote gets faster and more accurate with every piece of information you include in the first request. Here is what to prepare to receive a quotation in 24–48 hours without email ping-pong.

The perfect checklist

InformationWhy it matters
DXF/DWG drawing (or dimensioned PDF, or sample)It drives nesting and cutting; without it we must redraw
Material and thicknessS235? Stainless 304? Corten? Price and cutting parameters change
Quantity (and expected reorders)Nesting multiple parts cuts scrap and unit cost
Required tolerancesThey decide the process: HD plasma, laser or machining
Further operationsBending, welding, threading, rolling
FinishRaw, galvanized, painted (RAL), brushed
Expected deliveryUrgencies can be prioritised in production

Most common mistakes

  • Sending only a photo with not even one reference dimension
  • DXF with wrong scale, double or open lines
  • No material specified: between S235 and 316 stainless the price can triple
  • Forgetting the finish: hot-dip galvanizing must be designed in (vent holes)
  • Asking for tight tolerances where they are not needed: you pay for useless precision

How the price is built

In a typical job, cost splits between material (30–50%), cutting (machine time + consumables), operations (bending, welding, cleaning) and finish. Quantity and smart nesting are the best levers to reduce unit price.

How long it takes

With a complete drawing and data: 24–48 hours. With a physical sample to measure or a drawing to rebuild: 3–5 days. For complex projects we are happy to visit the site.

Conclusion

Send your DXF or even a dimensioned sketch: the Metal S.r.l. team replies with a clear quotation and no surprises on the invoice.
